What this site collects, who else gets it, and how to stop it.

The short version
I don’t sell your data and I don’t want your personal information. What follows is an honest description of the ordinary web plumbing — hosting logs, analytics, ads, comments — that does touch data about you.
What is collected

There is no account system on this site. You cannot register, and nothing asks you for a name unless you comment.
Cookies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. This site’s own cookies do two things: remember your comment details if you leave one, and keep a session for me when I log in to write.
Third-party cookies are the larger part. Advertising and analytics providers set their own, and I do not control them.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. Nothing on this site breaks if you do.
Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which articles people read. It collects usage data including a truncated IP address, and it uses cookies.
You can opt out entirely with Google’s browser add-on.
Advertising
This site displays third-party advertising, including Google AdSense and other advertising partners.

Opting out of personalised advertising does not remove ads. It makes them less relevant.
Affiliate links
Some pages contain affiliate links. Clicking one may pass a referral identifier to the retailer so a commission can be attributed. It does not change your price. Full detail on the Disclosure page.
Comments
If you leave a comment, the name, email address, IP address and browser string are stored along with it. An anonymised hash of your email may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have a profile image.
Comments and their metadata may be retained indefinitely so that follow-ups can be recognised. You can ask me to delete yours at any time.
Embedded content
Articles may embed content from other sites — maps, video, images. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited that site directly, including any data collection or tracking it does. I have no control over it.
⚠️ Your rights
If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK (GDPR)
You have the right to request a copy of the personal data held about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority. Where processing relies on consent — advertising and analytics cookies — you may withdraw that consent at any time.
If you are in California (CCPA/CPRA)
You have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request its deletion, and to opt out of its “sale” or “sharing.” I do not sell personal information. Advertising cookies set by third parties may nonetheless qualify as “sharing” under California law; the opt-out links in the Advertising section above are how you stop it.
If you are in Korea (PIPA)
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, and may object to its processing.

Children
This site is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided information here, email me and I will delete it.
Security
This site is served over HTTPS. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and I cannot guarantee absolute security. Please do not send me sensitive personal information by email.
Changes
If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted here with a new date at the top. Material changes will be noted on the site.
